In this article, we're flipping the script on productivity. Today, we're going to talk about how to be productive… slowly.

Now, I know what you're thinking—slow productivity? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Keep reading, because this might just change the way you approach your work, your goals, and even your day-to-day life.

But first, let's break down what I mean by "slow productivity."

In today's world, we're all about hustle, grind, and moving at 100 miles per hour. But is that really the best way to get things done?

Slow productivity is about focusing on the quality of your work rather than the quantity. It’s about working steadily, mindfully, and with intention—so you end up with better results and less burnout. Think of it like cooking a slow, delicious meal versus throwing something quick in the microwave.

Sure, the microwave gets it done fast, but which one do you really enjoy more?

Which one nourishes you?

Let's start by looking at why slowing down can actually make you more productive in the long run.

When you're constantly rushing, you're more likely to make mistakes, overlook details, and - let's be honest - end up feeling exhausted. But when you slow down, you can focus on doing things right the first time. You’re not just crossing things off a list; you’re creating something that lasts.

Ever heard of the tortoise and the hare? Spoiler alert: The tortoise wins because slow and steady really does win the race.

But before we dive into the strategies for slow productivity, let's address one of the biggest productivity myths out there, multitasking.

Multitasking is often seen as a badge of honour: "Look at how much I can do at once!"

But in reality, multitasking is one of the biggest productivity killers. When you split your attention between multiple tasks, you're not giving any of them your full focus.

The result?

Lower quality, rushed work, more mistakes, and a brain that’s constantly on adrenaline and overload.

Think of it like trying to juggle. You might keep the balls in the air for a while, but eventually, something’s going to drop.

The truth is, our brains aren’t wired to handle multiple tasks at once effectively. When you slow down and focus on one task at a time, you actually get more done and for a better result at a higher quality.

So, how do you actually practice slow productivity and avoid the multitasking trap?

Let’s dive into a few practical strategies you can start using today.

First up, prioritize deep work.

Set aside specific blocks of time where you can focus on one task without distractions. Turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and really immerse yourself in the work. This isn’t about speed; it’s about depth and focus.

You might have heard of the Pomodoro Technique, where you work for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break.

But here’s a twist—extend it!

Build up to working for 50 minutes and then take a 10-minute break. This allows you to get into a flow state, where you can actually enjoy the process of working, instead of feeling rushed.

Another tip - plan your day the night before.

This doesn’t mean cramming your schedule with tasks, but rather setting a maximum of 3-5 priorities for the next day. When you wake up, you’ll know exactly what to focus on, and you can take your time doing it well. When you start working the next day, focus on those priorities and only those priorities.

Finally, don’t forget mindfulness.

Take a few moments throughout the day to pause, breathe, and check in with yourself.

How are you feeling?

What’s your energy like?

A 5-minute pause isn't going to affect your overall productivity - 5 minutes is a drop in the ocean of your day.

This helps you stay in tune with your pace and avoid burning out. Mindfulness gives you space and time, so that you can then focus on the next priority without feeling frazzled during the day.

By practicing slow productivity, you’ll find that you’re not just getting more done—you’re getting the right things done. You’ll have more energy, less stress, and you might even start enjoying your work more. Remember, productivity isn’t about speed; it’s about making progress in a sustainable, meaningful way."

So, if you’re ready to take the slow and steady route to productivity, remember - set aside specific blocks of time to deeply focus on one task. Work for a specific block of time, and then take a break.

Plan your day the night before and aim for no more than 3 to 5 priorities to get done.

And be mindful during the day.

The tortoise won for a reason - slow can be powerful.
